My husband and I recently celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary. I remember the day we met like it was yesterday, and now we are out of the newlywed stage! Marriage has been the biggest blessing in my life and my husband is constantly encouraging me and challenging me to be the person God intended for me to be. Like any regular sentimental sap, I absolutely love looking through old photos. So of course when our anniversary comes around, I pull out all of my photo albums and relive the happiest day of our lives. This year while looking through our honeymoon photos, I thought it would be nice to share our experience in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Riviera Maya is a large region of Mexico that encompasses many popular tourist destinations including Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. The region is tropical and lush while simultaneously boasting a beautiful coastline. Below are some of our favorite things to do Riviera Maya.
WHAT TO DO IN RIVIERA MAYA //
1. Swim in a Cenote (se-no-tay).
Cenotes are a natural occurring phenomenon in this region of Mexico and visiting one is a must when in Cancun. A cenote forms when the ground sinks and forms a natural cave that then fills with water. Many of the cenotes are perfectly safe to swim in and it’s such a magical experience. There are several to choose from but the most famous include Dos Ojos, Ik-Kil and Gran Cenote. We visited a less popular (but none the less beautiful) cenote that required us to rappel down the side of a waterfall to access it. Do your research to decide which cenote you will choose to explore when in Mexico.
2. Check out one of the adventure theme parks.
The area is home to several popular theme parks that more or less offer the same activities. We chose to visit Xplor because it had the most epic ziplines. We ziplined, swam through an underground river and went ATV-ing through the jungle (where my husband managed to break the one rule they had: don’t crash your ATV).
3. Take a Margarita making class.
We decided to sign up for the margarita class through our resort and it was so much fun. By the end of the hour we had 4 different margarita glasses sitting in front of each of us. We definitely could not finish all the drinks we learned to make and at the end of the lesson we were seriously in need of a bathroom after drinking so much. Not to mention it was so much fun stumbling around the hotel grounds after drinking so much tequila. If your resort offers something like this I highly recommend you try it out!
4. Relax at your resort.
It’s funny that some of us need to be told to relax on vacation, but it can be hard to take time for yourself with so many amazing things to see in the area. Luckily, Riviera Maya is home to some of the most spectacular and over the top resorts in the world. We spent almost everyday on our honeymoon lounging in the pool and enjoying happy hour (which was all day long) at the swim up bar.
5. Visit the Mayan Ruins at Tulum.
The Mayans knew exactly what they were doing when they built their civilization overlooking the ocean. The views from these ruins are unbeatable. Not to mention that the ruins themselves are fascinating to explore. I recommend taking a brief guided tour so that you get the best trivia. Then explore the small marketplace around the ruins and enjoy a fresh coconut like we did!
My husband and I were so happy with our honeymoon in this amazing region of the world. Cancun is so much more than just a spring break town. We would love to go back to explore more of the Cenotes and drink more margaritas soon! Comment below what your favorite thing to do in Cancun is or if you’re planning a trip there any time soon!
